Who We Are

The Rupertsland Centre for Métis Research is based at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Native Studies.  It was created by an agreement between the Government of Alberta (Innovation and Advanced Education), the University of Alberta and the Métis Nation of Alberta/Rupertsland Institute as a formal academic research centre. It is the first centre of its kind to explore areas of relevance and interest to (and with) Métis communities.

Research Director and Métis scholar Dr. Nathalie Kermoal leads the RCMR in focusing on the following specific issues of policy interest:

  1. educational deficits
  2. contemporary issues
  3. historical Métis land use
  4. historical Métis rights and
  5. a “think tank” function that could comment on emerging Métis policy decisions such as court decisions, new or revised legislation.
